The Science of Microneedling to Restore Your Glow

2–4 minutes

The collagen that our body naturally produces is responsible for the structure, hydration, and firmness of our skin. In our mid-twenties our fibroblast cells, which produce collagen, begin to slow down production and we lose about 1% of our collagen every year. This natural aging process can lead to fine lines and wrinkles, visibly thinner skin, and a feeling of not looking like yourself.

While aging is a natural part of life, modern regenerative treatments can support the skin’s ability to repair and renew itself. One of the most effective ways to stimulate this natural process is through microneedling.

Studies have shown that four sessions of microneedling can increase collagen production by 400%!

How Microneedling Works

Microneedling works by stimulating the skin’s natural regenerative processes. During treatment tiny sterile needles create controlled micro-channels in the skin, which signal the body to begin its natural healing response.

This process activates fibroblast cells that produce collagen and elastin, the essential proteins responsible for skin firmness, strength, and elasticity. As new collagen forms over the following weeks and months the skin gradually becomes smoother, stronger, and more resilient, improving overall tone and texture.

By triggering the skin’s natural wound-healing response, microneedling encourages the production of new collagen and elastin, helping restore strength and resilience to the skin over time.

How Often Should I Get it?

While a single microneedling treatment can stimulate collagen production, a series of treatments typically produces more noticeable and longer-lasting results.

Each session encourages the skin’s natural healing response, gradually building new collagen and elastin over time. With treatments spaced several weeks apart, the skin has time to repair and regenerate between sessions.

This cumulative process leads to smoother texture, improved firmness, and healthier overall skin quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients find microneedling very tolerable. A topical numbing cream is applied before the treatment to keep you comfortable. During the procedure, you may feel a mild vibrating or prickling sensation, but it is generally well tolerated.

A typical microneedling appointment takes about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the area being treated and whether numbing time is included.

After treatment the skin may appear red and slightly sensitive, similar to a mild sunburn. This usually improves within 24 to 48 hours, although some patients may experience mild dryness or flaking for a few days as the skin renews itself.

Many patients see improvement after one treatment, but the best results typically come from a series of 3–6 treatments spaced about 4–6 weeks apart. At your consultation, your aesthetic nurse will recommend a plan based on your individual skin goals.

Microneedling can help improve a variety of concerns, including:

  • fine lines and wrinkles
  • dull or aging skin
  • acne scars
  • enlarged pores
  • uneven skin texture
  • mild hyperpigmentation

Microneedling is generally considered safe for most skin types and tones. A consultation is important to determine whether the treatment is appropriate for your skin.
